The Evolution of the Sound Wellness Institute . . .

~ Bringing the Highest Quality of Certification to Holistic Practitioners

Sharon CarneI have been a musician and music teacher all my life. Yet, it wasn’t until the early 1990s that a group of nervous adult students innocently sparked my interest in the deeper and healing nature of sound.

This led to intense personal research in sound healing and sound therapy and ultimately to study with two of the field’s pioneers, Jonathan Goldman and Tom Kenyon.

As soon as I landed there, I knew I had come home to soul work. It is endlessly fascinating how the ‘universe’ conspires with you when you declare or feel in your heart that something is soul work.

In 2008, I was invited to participate as a facilitator in a study on stress reduction sponsored by the Integrative Health Institute at Mount Royal University. I developed a program specifically for the study using a variety of ways sound and music relieves stress.

At the conclusion of the program, enthusiasm from my group was so high that I knew I had to find a way to make this information and experience available to a larger audience. So the material was expanded, and Sound Wellness was created about a month after my work with the Integrative Health Institute. In the fall of 2008 we offered our first program to holistic practitioners wanting to integrate the use of sound into their practice.

In 2009, my husband, Edward Carne, joined the Sound Wellness team full time. In 2017 Sound Wellness evolved into the Sound Wellness Institute. We worked with an advanced education specialist to develop the first verified competency certification for sound healing/sound therapy in Canada. All of our programs were upgraded and expanded to fulfill the needs of professional holistic practitioners.

We then approached the Natural Health Practitioners of Canada Association for formal, national approval of our programs. Following their review of all our course materials, the Association approved our programs for credit for their members. In addition, practitioners with our Level 2 Sound Wellness Certification were welcomed to apply as members.

The Sound Wellness Institute continues to expand and grow. At the beginning of 2022, we launched the first courses in our Level 3 program. We have invited Tina Thrussell to be the new Director of Training as we begin training some of our Sound Wellness Practitioners to teach our courses.
